Choose one short sentence I might say in real life.

Listen and say it
Read the Pinyin, listen to the tones, then say each word.

Look inside each character
See the parts inside the characters and learn what they do.

Build the meaning again
Put the characters, words, and whole sentence back together.

Make new sentences
Change one part and make three to five new sentences.

Write it from memory
Close the lesson, write it on paper, and check my work.
